Lisbon Oceanarium |
Visit Europe's largest Oceanarium |
The Lisbon Oceanarium is a museum of marine biology located in the Parque das Nações in Lisbon, Portugal, built as part of Expo 98.
Created by the North American architect Peter Chermayeff, recalls an aircraft carrier and is installed on a pier surrounded by water. It is the second largest oceanarium in the world and contains an impressive collection of species - birds, mammals, fish and other marine inhabitants.
The habitats chosen by their natural wealth in terms of flora and fauna, were: Antarctic Ocean, coral reef of the Indian Ocean, rocky shores of the Pacific Ocean coast and the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean.
The main attraction for most of the visitors, is the large central tank, where coexist several species of fish such as sharks, barracudas, rays, tuna and small tropical fish. Although she wants to be a representation of the open ocean, has been criticized by many scientists that add little related species in the same space.
A visit to Europe's largest Oceanarium is a constant challenge to knowledge. Inhabited by 15,000 animals and plants of more than 450 species, a reconstitution of the various ecosystems of the oceans, is a unique and rare beauty. |
